Key information
Following the introduction of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on the PS5 Pro, the required computing performance previously prevented similar AI upscaling from running on the standard PS5. Today, a new performance tier of AI upscaling called Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) has been announced.
Developed in collaboration with AMD under Project Amethyst, QSSR is a faster evolution of PSSR designed to bring the benefits of AI-assisted upscaling to the PS5, while PSSR remains the highest standard on the PS5 Pro.
The first titles to adopt this new library are Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both games receive updates today to add QSSR as a graphical option on the PS5.
Insomniac Games technical director Mike Fitzgerald noted that QSSR enhances pixel-level clarity and stability in Marvel's Wolverine. Additionally, Sucker Punch Productions lead rendering engineer Jasmin Patry stated that QSSR brings finer detail and temporal stability previously unavailable on the PS5.
QSSR will be made widely available to all PlayStation developers for future titles, though game contents and release dates may vary by region.
