Key information
Developed by Tokyo-based Neji. Games, the command-line adventure game 'Kafka at the Station' was showcased at OSAKA INDIE GAMES SUMMIT 2026. Planned for a PC release on Steam in 2027, the title features nostalgic pixel art and lyrical sound design, drawing inspiration from 1980s Japanese personal computer text adventures.
Rather than picking standard on-screen choices, players use a keyboard to directly type English commands such as 'right', 'left', 'look', or 'talk girl' to navigate the surroundings and move the narrative forward. The developer noted that English is used to accommodate global distribution in languages like English, Chinese, and Korean, while bypassing the difficulty of direct Japanese kana or romaji input.
The developer explained that the project originated from finding traditional visual novels occasionally sleep-inducing, recalling instead the engagement of vintage text-input titles. Addressing classical genre frustrations, the developer noted that common alternative synonyms suggested by players during events are actively added as aliases to minimize friction.
The Steam store page currently offers the same playable demo featured at the exhibition, allowing users to experience the first chapters of the surreal journey.
