Key information
Vanillaware and Marvelous have announced Oboro Muramasa Kaikitan, a new version of the 2D action RPG originally released in 2009. This title includes the base game and all DLC, featuring six playable characters with distinct combat systems. It is scheduled for release on February 4, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Switch, and a successor console, with a Steam version following on February 5.
The combat system has been significantly overhauled. Players can now manage separate resources for special techniques and defense, allowing for more frequent use of powerful moves. Additionally, the new "Iai Gauge" system enables players to actively recharge their screen-clearing Iai strikes through offensive play, rather than waiting for cooldowns. These changes emphasize a cycle where aggressive attacks directly facilitate further offensive options.
Exploration has also been refined, with wider areas becoming accessible upon unlocking seals. While the game retains its progression-based route restrictions, the map now provides clearer guidance to prevent players from accidentally entering high-difficulty zones. However, skilled players are encouraged to explore dangerous areas early to gather resources necessary for equipment upgrades.
Overall, the title aims to improve accessibility and freedom. Features such as hot springs, cooking buffs, and fast travel have been integrated to streamline the experience, making the game more approachable for both returning fans and newcomers.
