Key information
Ubisoft is reportedly planning to release a director's cut of 2020's Watch Dogs Legion in the first half of 2027, according to reports from Insider Gaming and IGN. The updated version is described as a remake aimed at reinventing the dormant open-world franchise, which has been inactive following Legion's poor reception. Reworking the existing title is likely a cost-effective way for Ubisoft to test the waters for the series' future before committing to a brand new installment.
The 2020 game faced near-universal criticism for its mechanics, which allowed players to control any non-player character belonging to specific ability classes rather than focusing on a single protagonist. While the concept tied into the franchise's surveillance and technology themes, it ultimately fell short.
Despite the series' dormant status, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently told an investor that the company still considers Watch Dogs to be an important brand for the future, though it is not expected to be assigned to any creative houses soon. Additionally, a live-action Watch Dogs movie that completed principal photography in 2024 and reshoots in 2025 remains without a release date.
