Key information

Jagex is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the RuneScape series. During the RuneFest 2026 fan event held in the UK, the developer made major announcements, highlighted by the reveal of a brand-new MMORPG under the codename RS4.

RS4 is being developed as a fourth-generation MMORPG utilizing Unreal Engine to drastically improve graphics, systems, and expression. Jagex emphasized that RS4 will not replace existing titles but will stand alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and RuneScape: Dragonwilds as an independent experience.

The game is set on the unexplored continent of Ashenfall, located northeast of Gielinor, taking place during the Sixth Age several years after the events of RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Because the project is still in early development and will take several years to release, Jagex aims to incorporate community feedback early, with specific gameplay and testing details expected in 2027.

RuneFest 2026 also detailed updates for existing titles, including the RuneScape Reignited project for 2027, roadmap updates for RuneScape: Dragonwilds following its 1.0 release in September 2026, and a Smithing skill rework proposal for Old School RuneScape.
