Steam download/update errors: separate cache, files and disk problems
For installation/update errors, record the reason in parentheses. A blocked download is different from damaged installed files. This sequence reorganizes Valve's advice into cache, installation location, and network/hardware checks.
Start with the download cache
Restart Steam and the PC, then open Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache and confirm. Installed games remain, but you must sign into Steam again: check your sign-in method first. If downloading or launching still fails, contact Steam Support.

Verify installed files when they may be damaged
- Restart the PC and launch Steam.
- Right-click the game in Library, or use its page's gear icon → Properties.
- Open Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait until complete, then reproduce the original situation.
This checks missing textures/content and crashes. Some local configuration files are not meant to be replaced, so a verification-failure message can remain; Valve says that can be normal. Do not verify several games at once or alongside disk defragmentation or a full antivirus scan.

Check the installation location and client
Open Settings → Storage → the library's three dots → Repair Folder to check write-permission issues. Change Download Region to compare servers, or create a library on another drive to test installation/moving.
For client repair, you can run the Steam installer over the existing installation location. This is different from uninstalling Steam: Valve warns that uninstallation deletes game content. Do not jump straight to uninstalling.
If basic checks do not solve it
Restart router/modem, update OS/drivers and compare another connection. Mac drivers are managed through OS updates rather than separate installation. With technical support, check firewall, antivirus, recording, proxy and system-management interference and exceptions. Do not leave security disabled.
Overclocking can cause file/memory errors: consider default settings. Check storage through Windows drive Properties → Tools → Error checking, or Mac Disk Utility → First Aid. Test RAM with Windows Memory Diagnostic (mdsched). Seek professional help if unfamiliar with these advanced checks.
Complete installation/update checklist and reinstall warning: Valve — Installation/update issues
Give support the game name, parenthesized error, target drive, failure point and checks tried. Also note whether the same file repeatedly fails or other games are affected; this can help diagnosis.
