Epic Games has launched a preview version of its redesigned Epic Games Launcher. According to vice president Martin Keely, the application has been rebuilt from the ground up using a new tech stack, encompassing the shell, download manager, library, and store architecture.

The primary focus of this initial phase is performance. Epic reports that the library loads 30 times faster than the previous version, while startup times are twice as fast. The launcher occupies a 300mb footprint, intended to support a broad range of hardware configurations.

The new launcher introduces support for Windows, MacOS, and Linux. While Fortnite is planned for Linux, Epic stated it must first rebuild its Easy Anti-Cheat system for that platform before the game becomes available. Additionally, the update includes quality of life features such as customizable top bars and improved library filtering.

Currently in early development, the launcher is described as light on features. Epic plans to prioritize improving game discovery and social sharing components in future updates. Despite these efforts, some users remain skeptical regarding how the store compares to Steam.
