Before achieving fame as a horror author, Stephen King spent over 10 years obsessed with creating an American version of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. He struggled to adapt epic fantasy tropes to the United States due to the lack of traditional European settings like castles.

Inspiration struck after King watched a 60 Minutes report regarding chemical and biological warfare. The program detailed a late 60s incident in Utah where military testing released a nerve agent, killing thousands of sheep and nearly affecting the population of Salt Lake City.

King reimagined the concept of Mordor as a post-pandemic American landscape. He selected Las Vegas as the ideal setting for his narrative's central conflict between good and evil, effectively replacing traditional fantasy geography with a devastated urban environment.

Published in 1978, The Stand depicts survivors navigating a ruined world against a superpowered antagonist. King has acknowledged that while the story evolved into a horror-tinged narrative, his original intent was to craft a fantasy adventure that mirrored the epic scope of Tolkien's work.
