Sony detailed a new AI upscaling model called Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) for the standard PlayStation 5 console in a blog post. Developed through the Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD that began last year, QSSR follows the PSSR technology that debuted on the PS5 Pro earlier this year. Because the standard PS5 features a less powerful GPU, QSSR was created as a much lighter model than PSSR to run on the base console.

While QSSR does not preserve details with the same quality as the PS5 Pro, it aims to offer much higher precision than the traditional temporal upscaling used on the standard console. The technology debuts in Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Insomniac's technology director Mike Fitzgerald noted that QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability to environments, while Sucker Punch lead rendering engineer Jasmin Patry highlighted its ability to resolve minute details in characters and environments with temporal stability not previously possible on the standard PS5.

Sony shared video clips comparing QSSR to standard temporal upscaling, showing improvements in preserving distant buildings in Wolverine and maintaining grass shape in Ghost of Yōtei, despite some remaining blur and visual noise. Sony is making QSSR available to all developers. An update for Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei featuring the technology is scheduled to be released later today.
