Ludeon Studios has announced that the colony simulation game RimWorld will transition from the Unity engine to the developer's proprietary Waylith Engine in the upcoming 1.7 update. The studio claims the game will maintain its visual and gameplay identity while delivering performance gains ranging from two to three times faster.

The new engine aims to accelerate startup times, map and world generation, and general ticks-per-second. Ludeon highlights significant efficiency improvements, noting that a modpack containing 1500 mods saw its load time reduced from 14 minutes to 6 minutes. Crucially, existing save files remain compatible, and the developer states that community mods will continue to function despite the engine migration.

While early reports from the Steam beta branch confirm performance improvements and mod compatibility, some users have observed increased RAM usage. Additionally, Ludeon warns that hardware older than 10 years may struggle to run the updated version, potentially rendering it incompatible with legacy systems.

The update is currently available for testing via the Steam beta branch. This shift follows a broader industry trend where independent developers are moving away from commercial engines, a move previously seen with titles like Slay the Spire 2.
