Nintendo has officially confirmed that it has no plans to abandon physical game formats. Despite a broader industry trend toward digital-only distribution, the company intends to continue supporting physical cartridges for the Switch 2, citing significant demand from its player base.

Bill van Zyll, Nintendo's vice president and general manager for Latin America, stated that the company remains neutral and prioritizes consumer preference. He noted that the Switch 2, which has been on the market for over a year, currently provides both digital and physical options to ensure players can choose their preferred format.

Regarding pricing, Van Zyll explained that physical games may cost more than digital versions due to the expenses associated with manufacturing cartridges, packaging, assembly, transportation, and distribution. These logistical costs are cited as the primary justification for price differences between the two formats.

This stance contrasts with Sony's recent announcement to cease physical disc production for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. While Nintendo maintains its current strategy, it acknowledges that not all future releases will necessarily include the full game on the physical cartridge, even as it continues to support collectors and those who value the ability to lend or resell titles.
