Gears of War: E-Day serves as a key test for Microsoft's current exclusivity strategy for XBOX Game Studios. While the title aims to attract both veteran fans and newcomers by depicting the Emergence Day events, early commercial performance appears modest according to recent market analysis.
Analyst Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics estimates that the game sold 230,000 copies between its October 1 early access period and its October 6 full release. Of this total, 180,000 sales were recorded on Steam, while 62,000 units were sold across XBOX console and PC platforms.
Alinea Analytics reports that 1.7 million users accessed the game via Game Pass. Notably, 722,000 of these subscribers purchased a 30 euro Premium upgrade for early access. This activity generated approximately 37 million dollars in revenue, with 26 million coming from XBOX and 11 million from Steam.
Elliott suggests that Game Pass is cannibalizing premium sales, noting that the 70 dollar edition is functionally dead on consoles. Furthermore, player engagement data shows that 54% of XBOX users played for five hours or less, compared to 32% on Steam, likely reflecting the diverse audience attracted by subscription services.
