On October 14, 2026, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced the formation of Xbox Labs, a new experimental team. Led by CTO Scott Van Vliet, this small group consists of engineers, scientists, and game creators tasked with exploring emerging technologies and ideas for both players and developers.

The team aims to investigate how new tools can streamline the porting and reconstruction of older titles. By leveraging advancements such as AI agents for coding, implementation, and testing, the initiative seeks to challenge traditional boundaries between software and hardware, as well as the conventional roles of game creation and play.

Sharma noted that the team will examine recent technical experiments, including the rapid decompilation of games for hardware migration and the use of WebAssembly and WebGPU to run PC titles within web browsers. These efforts are intended to reduce existing constraints regarding where games are played and who can participate in their development.

While the official Xbox Labs website is live, specific project details remain undisclosed. Sharma clarified that this team serves as a space for experimentation rather than a shift in existing company strategy, ensuring that current operations continue alongside these new technical explorations.
