Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has introduced Xbox Labs, a specialized unit composed of engineers, scientists, and game makers tasked with rapidly iterating on new features and tools. This initiative aims to transform emerging concepts into experiences for developers and players, with success measured by user engagement and creation metrics.

The team will focus on formalizing ongoing research and development projects rather than recruiting new staff. Current areas of investigation include porting games to Apple silicon, exploring browser-based distribution via WebGPU, and providing support for game modders.

While Sharma noted that AI-driven game mashups inspired the unit's creation, a company spokesperson clarified that the team has no explicit mandate to prioritize AI. Technology will only be utilized when deemed necessary or beneficial for specific projects.

Xbox Labs has no immediate plans to ship products. Future outputs may be released through the Xbox Insiders program or other distribution channels depending on the project. This move aligns with Sharma's broader organizational shift toward a product-focused development strategy.
