PlayStation has announced the upcoming introduction of QSSR, which stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution, bringing AI-powered upscaling to the base PS5 console. Originating from Project Amethyst, a graphics applied AI collaboration with AMD, QSSR was created to overcome the high computational demands that previously prevented standard PSSR from running on the base console.
Built on a simplified neural network architecture and a manually tuned implementation that maximizes PS5 performance, QSSR extends AI upscaling benefits to the standard hardware. While PSSR remains the gold standard for the PS5 Pro, QSSR delivers notable enhancements in image detail richness and stability on the base model.
The first titles confirmed to use the new library are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both games are being updated to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on the PS5, providing players with enhanced pixel-level clarity and temporal stability across environments.
Insomniac Games' CTO Mike Fitzgerald and Sucker Punch Productions' rendering engineering director Jasmin Patry both praised the addition for bringing PS5 Pro-level image quality closer to standard PS5 players. The QSSR library will be made available to all PlayStation developers moving forward.
