Glen Schofield, co-creator of The Callisto Protocol, has publicly attributed the game's troubled launch to publisher Krafton. Schofield claims his team at Striking Distance Studios was forced to release the title ahead of schedule, citing a shift from an original March 2023 target to December 2022.
Development was reportedly hindered by COVID-related staff disruptions and a mandate to ensure cross-platform compatibility for PS4 and PS5. Schofield alleges that the studio was also tasked with handling marketing and publishing duties, leading to crunch conditions and the removal of content that was later partially restored through post-launch DLC.
Following the game's release, Krafton CEO CH Kim described the performance as falling short of market expectations. Schofield notes that the publisher viewed the project as a failure, despite his efforts to address technical issues through 86 post-launch patches and additional content updates.
While Schofield expresses frustration with the publisher's business decisions, he has faced criticism for not accepting personal responsibility for the project's shortcomings. Having left Striking Distance Studios in 2023, Schofield has since retired from game development, though he has expressed interest in a potential sequel.
