Modder Frederik Wessberg is developing a project for Starfield that aims to eliminate the game's traditional landing animations and loading screens. This work-in-progress mod allows players to transition from space to a planet's surface seamlessly, a feature often compared to the mechanics found in No Man's Sky.
To achieve this, Wessberg replaced the game's original floating textures with 3D models of planets and moons that maintain detail at various altitudes. The mod utilizes Starfield's existing biome, climate, and surface data, modulating this information with physics to ensure the rendering remains accurate to the game's internal logic.
The transition process uses cloud cover to minimize visual seams during the final cell switch, though Wessberg clarifies that these clouds are not a disguised loading screen. For airless bodies, the mod performs the switch without a veil, relying on exposure matching to maintain visual consistency while assets load in the background.
Once completed, the mod will be released on Nexus Mods. It is expected to offer manual flight in low orbit and an autopilot mode that allows players to walk around their ship during descent, enabling landings at any location, including water.
