Rockstar Games has clarified its creative direction for Grand Theft Auto VI, emphasizing that the title will prioritize satire over a direct reflection of reality. According to Rupert Humphries, senior vice president of narrative, the studio aims to construct a fictional world rather than mimicking specific real-world events, movements, or individuals.
The development team intends to deform and exaggerate societal aspects to create a more absurd and humorous environment. By focusing on the core of various issues, the developers aim to highlight the ridiculous nature of certain positions, ensuring the content remains engaging within the game's unique universe.
To bring this world to life, Rockstar is incorporating elements such as political debate programs, automated campaign calls, and election posters. Humphries noted that the setting of Leonida provides significant material for this satirical approach, allowing the studio to explore cultural conflicts without needing to mirror the exact world players inhabit.
The long development cycle necessitates careful selection of themes to ensure they do not feel outdated upon release. Rob Nelson, head of Rockstar North, and Humphries both highlighted the importance of avoiding short-lived trends, opting instead to focus on timeless human behaviors that can be effectively satirized.
