Ludeon Studios has announced a transition for RimWorld, moving away from the Unity engine to its own proprietary Waylith engine starting with update 1.7. The developer asserts that this shift aims to deliver an identical gameplay experience while potentially boosting performance by two to four times.
Internal testing indicates substantial gains in startup times, map generation, and tick-per-second performance. Notably, a stress test involving a late-game colony demonstrated a 2.2-fold improvement, while loading a collection of 1,500 mods dropped from 14 minutes to 6 minutes. Ludeon cautions that actual results will vary based on individual hardware specifications.
The Waylith engine is currently accessible via the 1.7 beta branch. Ludeon reports that save files from version 1.6 remain compatible and most existing mods should function without modification. Furthermore, the new engine introduces C# language features intended to simplify the creation of complex mods without compromising game stability.
While the transition promises significant technical upgrades, Ludeon notes that some older computer systems might face compatibility issues with the new engine. The studio has invited affected players to contact them via Discord, suggesting that they may be able to implement adjustments to assist with these hardware limitations.
