Ludeon Studios has announced update 1.7 for the sci-fi colony simulator RimWorld, which migrates the game from the Unity engine to their proprietary Waylith engine. This transition aims to maintain the original gameplay experience while significantly improving performance.

Internal testing indicates that the Waylith engine provides a 2 to 4 times performance increase across various tasks, including game startup, map generation, and save loading. Notably, a mod pack containing 1,500 items saw its loading time reduced from 14 minutes to 6 minutes. The update also introduces new C# language features for modders, facilitating more complex custom effects and visual modifications.

While the update supports backward compatibility for save files and most existing mods, Ludeon Studios notes that performance gains depend on individual PC environments and mod configurations. Additionally, the engine may not function on computers older than 10 years, and some mods might display compatibility warnings.

Beyond the update, the developer teased an unannounced project currently in development using the Waylith engine. Unlike previous major updates that included new expansion DLCs, this announcement focuses on the new engine and the mysterious upcoming title. Update 1.7 is currently available via the Steam unstable branch, though a release date for the stable version remains unconfirmed.
