Developer Ludeon Studios has officially announced version 1.7 for the colony management simulation game RimWorld. This significant update, which arrives over a year after the previous major release, focuses on a technical overhaul rather than gameplay changes.

The core of this update is the migration from the Unity engine to the developer's proprietary Waylith Engine. According to internal testing by Ludeon Studios, this transition results in a performance increase of 2 to 4 times, significantly reducing startup, loading, and map generation times.

Ludeon Studios notes that version 1.7 maintains compatibility with version 1.6, allowing existing save files to function without issues. While most mods are expected to work without updates, the developer warns that the new engine may not support some computers older than 10 years.

The update is currently available via the unstable branch on Steam for those who wish to test it early. Furthermore, the studio revealed that they are developing a new game using the Waylith Engine, though further details remain forthcoming.
