During Gamescom 2026, four multiplayer activities from Nintendo Switch Sports Resort were previewed in local multiplayer: airplane flight, skateboarding, table tennis, and thumb wrestling. The game aims to capture the spirit of Wii Sports by featuring classic and new disciplines around a fully rebuilt Wuhu Island, with returning sports receiving visual and gameplay updates and new activities utilizing Joy-Con 2 features.

The airplane flight activity lets players freely explore Wuhu Island with rebuilt, detailed environments where Miis move in vehicles and collectibles are hidden. Controlled by holding the Joy-Con 2 horizontally and tilting the hand, motion controls work well for steering, accelerating, and braking. Meanwhile, skateboarding uses the Joy-Con 2 Mouse Mode on a flat surface to direct the board, though both exploration activities left testers with some hand fatigue and a desire for more organic cooperative interaction.

The competitive modes delivered the best impressions, particularly table tennis, which benefits from precise motion controls that allow natural directional changes, angle adjustments, and strategic positioning to move opponents across the table.

Thumb wrestling proved to be the biggest surprise of the event, transforming a simple concept into a tense strategic duel. Players hold a Joy-Con 2 vertically to control a giant thumb, aiming to pin the opponent's thumb for three seconds while managing a charge mechanic that balances power recovery against vulnerability.
