According to reports from Insider Gaming, developers working on the EA Sports College Football franchise are expressing concerns regarding the series' future. While the franchise saw a highly anticipated debut in 2024, sources indicate that sales have gradually declined with each subsequent release.

Financial pressures are mounting as licensing costs for athlete name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights have tripled. EA reportedly spent 600 dollars per player in 2024, totaling 7 million, but costs rose to 1,500 dollars per player, reaching approximately 20 million for the most recent title. Additionally, significant funds are allocated to licensing universities and bowl games.

To address these rising costs, EA attempted to introduce microtransactions into single-player modes, which faced severe backlash from players. Although the company retreated, sources suggest these monetization efforts may return in future titles. Some staff fear that if the game fails to retain or grow its player base, EA might restructure and discontinue the series before the end of the decade.

Despite these internal anxieties, not all sources share the same pessimism, with some maintaining that the franchise has a promising future. While College Football 25 was the second best-selling game of 2024 in the United States, subsequent titles have seen lower rankings, with College Football 26 placing seventh in 2025 and College Football 27 currently holding the tenth position.
