S-Game has adopted an unconventional development workflow for Phantom Blade Zero, where composer Caisheng Bo creates music before the game's bosses are even designed. This collaborative approach relies on the long-standing professional trust between Bo and Creative Director Soulframe, who often requests music to serve as inspiration for future boss encounters.

The musical direction aims to blend traditional Chinese instrumentation with modern genres like rock, metal, and electronic dance music. Bo encourages musicians to move beyond centuries-old compositions to innovate and produce fresh, unique sounds that function as a core element of the gameplay experience rather than mere background accompaniment.

This experimental process occasionally results in tracks that do not fit the final game. For instance, an early composition for a bride boss was rewritten after team members found it offensive. Additionally, a jazz-infused piece featuring traditional instruments was excluded because the team could not find a suitable place for it within the game's structure.

Players who purchase the pre-order deluxe edition will gain access to an in-game music player. This feature allows them to listen to these discarded tracks, including the original bride boss theme and the experimental jazz piece, providing insight into the composer's creative process and the team's editorial decisions.
