Rockstar Games recently disclosed that Grand Theft Auto 6 was originally codenamed Project Americas. The initial vision for the title involved covering vast regions across both North and South America, though the scope was eventually reduced to focus on Miami and its surrounding areas.

Development began with a 2015 research trip to Miami, but the project faced delays as resources were diverted to Red Dead Redemption 2. Following that release, the company expanded significantly, growing from 2,441 to 4,711 employees. By 2019, the game featured a dual-protagonist structure centered on Jason and Lucia, though the Covid-19 pandemic later complicated team coordination.

Rockstar addressed historical concerns regarding extreme crunch, with head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe stating the company aimed to improve working conditions compared to previous projects. While many employees reported positive changes, the studio currently faces an employment tribunal in Scotland regarding the dismissal of 34 staff members. Additionally, a 2022 phishing attack resulted in the invasive leak of unfinished game footage.

The game is now scheduled for release on 19th November for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X. A PC version is reportedly expected in Q1 of the following year. Rockstar leadership noted that foundational changes to their engine and tools should facilitate faster development cycles for future projects.
