A recent Bloomberg report details how Rockstar Games originally envisioned GTA 6 as a much larger project. During initial planning in 2015, the title was codenamed Project Americas and intended to encompass vast regions across North and South America.
The developer eventually reduced the game's scope to focus on Miami and its surrounding areas. Despite this reduction, the final map remains three times larger than the world featured in 2018's Red Dead Redemption II. Players will explore Vice City and various locations throughout the greater Leonida region.
Rockstar originally planned to develop GTA 6 alongside Red Dead Redemption II to facilitate an earlier release. However, Rob Nelson noted that the growing requirements of the Western title necessitated shifting staff across Rockstar's studios, resulting in a multi-year delay for GTA 6.
While the delay was significant, Nelson suggested that the technical efforts invested in Red Dead Redemption II would benefit GTA 6. Additionally, Rockstar officially denied rumors claiming the game cost $1.5 billion to develop, though the company declined to disclose the actual production budget.
