Bandai Namco's Ace Combat 8 offers an arcade aerial combat experience featuring high-quality visual sequences. However, Digital Foundry reports that the title faces technical challenges on consoles, as none of the platforms run the game above 1080p resolution, and all struggle to maintain a stable 60fps frame rate.
Developed using Unreal Engine 5, the game utilizes Nanite for distant detail and Lumen for lighting outside of missions. To maintain high frame rates, the engine aggressively adjusts resolution on consoles, which leads to reduced image sharpness.
Performance mode resolution varies by hardware: the PS5 Pro runs at 1080p, while the PS5 and Xbox Series X fluctuate between 720p and 1080p. The Xbox Series S is capped at 720p and lacks Lumen and other graphical features. A Quality mode is available on all consoles except the Series S to improve resolution.
Digital Foundry notes that 60fps is not fixed. The PS5 Pro maintains a near-stable 60fps with performance advantages over the PS5 and Xbox Series X, which experience drops during intense action. The Series S fluctuates between 60fps and 30fps while utilizing lower-quality textures.
