Hiroya Oku, the creator of Gantz, has officially announced his intention to retire from the manga industry. The artist stated on his personal X account that he plans to conclude his career following the completion of his current series, Kanreki Hime, noting that he feels he has already drawn enough.
The author has expressed retirement sentiments throughout the year, initially mentioning the possibility in February and May. Upon the release of the first volume of Kanreki Hime, Oku remarked that as he approaches his sixtieth birthday, he believes this project will serve as his final work.
In an August interview, Oku elaborated on his decision, explaining that he no longer possesses the motivation or energy required to conceive new stories and produce artwork. Despite his long-standing career, which began in 1988 and spans 38 years, he feels he lacks the stamina to continue professional activities.
Regarding his final project, Oku shared that he projected his own experiences and those of his creative team onto the middle-aged characters in Kanreki Hime. While the series lacks the science fiction elements like aliens or UFOs found in his previous works, he encourages readers to follow the story until its conclusion.
